Juilliard Pre-College Percussion Faculty Application – 2022

2020 Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar Masterclass

I created the following videos as content for a remote masterclass at the Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar during the height of the pandemic in which I discussed many different aspects of musical theater playing with a focus on subbing. I recorded three charts from Frozen and mixed my playing with the studio cast album so that the live playing is more forward in the mix. Let It Go is fairly straightforward and gives the students an idea of how to negotiate a setup, change instruments quickly, etc. In Love Is An Open Door and Fixer Upper, I created a split screen with the music so that the students could see how hand drum parts are typically notated and how I transcribed the parts that aren’t.

Fritz Kreisler – Tambourin Chinois (arr. Dan Granda)

Jeffrey Irving, xylophone
Jaske Goff II, Michael Iodice, Nicholas Kalantzopoulos and Ian Lang, marimbas

This performance was from the final chamber music concert of the 2013 Juilliard Summer Percussion Seminar. Although the video and audio quality aren’t great, you can hear that this marimba quartet I coached did a wonderful job of being flexible and following a soloist without a conductor! This piece really gave them an opportunity to learn to play chamber music in a way that many young percussionists don’t often have an opportunity to do.
